I am a commercial valuation surveyor who has been working in the same company for over ten years. I am now ready for a new challenge and am starting the process of applying for new roles. I am, however, nervous about how to prepare for interview, as it has been so long since I have had to attend one. I know that things have changed over the years and that many companies now use competency-based interview techniques. Can you give some advice on how best to prepare for this style of interview?

I am currently working in the commercial property sector and hold over 15 years’ experience as a chartered surveyor. I have become unsettled and am seeking a new challenge. I have submitted my CV for several positions but have been unsuccessful to date. Sometimes I haven’t even received an acknowledgement of my application. We’re still in the midst of the pandemic and while there are hopeful signs of a return to normal, the question arises: will it be the same as before or will it be a ‘new normal’? One sector that is adjusting to the new landscape is the recruitment industry. Traditionally, the recruitment process required substantial face-to-face interaction, but the pandemic put paid to that. While many people were made redundant over the past two years, many others were hired by means of a virtual recruitment process, which may become the norm.
